Narrative Behind the Bird Statuettes

As a background to my interest in designing the birds in the display cabinet, I recall a trip in 1980 to South Karelia, where I wandered through nature to catch a glimpse of the wildlife in the forests. We came close to an open mine where they were quarrying Spectrolite rock.

On the surface of the black stone, several crystals in blue, green, and yellow glimmered in the sun, so I picked a few to take home. Later, after designing birds in many different varieties of wood, I decided to form them in a more resistant material—Spectrolite and acid-proof stainless steel.

Spectrolite was discovered in Finland in 1940 when the defense line was built to protect the country’s eastern border. The Spectrolite bird is designed to resemble an Arctic Loon (in Finnish, Kuikka), a mythical bird from the Finnish Kalevala epic. A Kuikka feather, fixed to the side of a rowboat, was believed to bring luck when navigating rapids, which was a dangerous yet faster way to travel from one sea to another.

In The Kalevala, one way to ward off envious people from entering a home was to nail a Kuikka feather to the door. In Finnish nature, the Kuikka is a majestic and rare visitor to lonely, desolate lakes.

The other stainless steel fantasy bird could be imagined as another mythical bird from Kalevala, Sotka (the scaup duck), which laid the egg from which the entire world was created.

There are only 10 pieces in existence, each individually numbered.
